Rainbow Obsidian is a variety of obsidian (natural volcanic glass) that displays colorful iridescent bands when light hits it at the right angle. At first glance it often appears black, but under bright light hidden layers of color can emerge.
The colorful bands are created by:
- Microscopic inclusions and structures within the glass
- Light interference and reflection
- Thin layers formed during cooling of the lava
Depending on the specimen, you may see:
