Labradorite is a stunning feldspar mineral famous for its brilliant flashes of color, known as labradorescence. While the stone itself is usually gray or dark gray, it can display electric blue, green, gold, orange, and even rainbow flashes when viewed from different angles.

The colorful flashes occur because:

• Microscopic layers inside the stone scatter light.
• Different wavelengths reflect at different angles.
• The colors appear to move as the stone is rotated.

This optical effect is unique enough that it has its own name: labradorescence.

The strongest flashes in labradorite are often called "fire." Collectors may refer to a piece as having "full flash" when a large portion of its surface lights up with vibrant color when viewed from the right angle.
