Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava cools so quickly that crystals don’t have time to develop. Its glossy black appearance and razor-sharp edges made it important both historically and in modern decorative use.
Historical uses
Because obsidian can break into extremely sharp edges, ancient cultures used it for:
- arrowheads
- knives
- spear points
- ritual mirrors
Some modern surgical scalpels even use obsidian blades because they can be sharper than steel.
In crystal traditions, black obsidian is often associated with:
- Protection
- Grounding
- Shadow work and self-reflection
- Absorbing negative energy
