Black Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when lava cools extremely rapidly, preventing crystals from forming. Its glossy black appearance and razor-sharp fracture edges have made it valuable for tools, artwork, jewelry, and decorative carvings throughout human history.
Black Obsidian forms when:
- Volcanoes erupt silica-rich lava.
- The lava cools very quickly.
- Crystals cannot develop, creating natural glass.
Unlike most stones sold in crystal shops, obsidian is technically not a mineral because it lacks a crystalline structure.
Black Obsidian typically features:
- Deep jet-black color
- Smooth, glossy surfaces
- Reflective mirror-like polish
- Opaque appearance
It is often carved into spheres, towers, skulls, dragons, hearts, and other decorative shapes.
In crystal traditions, Black Obsidian is often associated with:
- Grounding
- Protection
- Self-reflection
- Emotional clearing
